Most tablets are held together by stearic acid, which is solid at body temperature. This keeps the tablet from dissolving in your body.

Magnesium stearate is the most common substance used to hold a tablet together.  Stearate, or stearic acid, lubricates the tablet through the manufacturing process and down your throat.  Candle wax is stearic acid.  It is mostly solid at body temperature (do your candles melt on 100 degree days?) and is not easily digested. What makes matters worse is that the manufacturer gets to claim the magnesium in the stearate as a nutrient on the label!

Most tablets do not dissolve easily in your body.  By the time they dissolve, they have traveled down the intestine past the part where vitamins and minerals are absorbed.  Choose capsules over tablets.

Fatty acid supplements, such as fish oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, etc, can be taken in softgels which do dissolve easily.  They can also be purchased in bulk and taken by the spoonful.
